Beautiful but not very Scottish
This performance was beautiful! The symphony was absolutely wonderful to listen to - they are a very talented group. However, our group was quite disappointed in the lack of Scottish feel. Someone in our group is actually from the UK (and I've traveled there a couple times) and he was even saying there wasn't much of a connection. The photos shown were bland and seemed disconnected and the music didn't have a true Scottish flare to it. I wouldn't have gone had I known it would be like this. Still beautiful but it definitely lacked in the theme of the show.
Masterful symphony
The event started out with Bach's Art of the Fugue, a difficult and mind blowing piece that the artists handled with precision and joy. The music passed over us, back and forth, with humor and sensitivity. Perfect.
Bach was followed by Mozart's resounding Requiem. Dark, brooding, the music swelled and opened to fill Devos Hall with sound I have rarely heard. The GR chorus was brilliant. The lovely tones of the soprano led the singers followed by the strong and beautiful bass. Next the Alto and Mezzo joined the entire group and blew us all away. It was a night we will never forget and can only hope the symphony will repeat!
